Number of McCafé coffee shop units in Europe 2018, by country
McCafé
McCafé is a coffeehouse style chain owned by fast food operator McDonalds. The concept was started by a McDonalds franchisee owner in Melbourne Australia, who used it to generate traffic to her McDonalds store. The idea was later developed and implemented across more international markets, taking advantage of consumer coffee market trends. Many McCafé units operate within or alongside McDonalds restaurants. In the United Kingdom there are no standalone McCafé units, but customers can buy their products within McDonalds restaurants.
Coffeehouse brands in Europe
McCafé ranks as one of the biggest three players on the European coffeehouse market, behind Costa Coffee and Starbucks. Like McCafé, both Costa and Starbuck’s presence across different European markets varies. Costa is largely dominant in the UK and operates a smaller number of stores in select European markets. Starbucks’ presence in Europe is also largest in the UK, but the brand operates across a wider number of markets.
